The Legacy of Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel

Discover the interesting story of one of the most iconic hotels in Mexico City due to its location and architectural style.
  • The origins of Sheraton Hotels in the world date from 1937, when founders Ernest Henderson and Robert Moore opened their first hotel in Springfield, Massachusetts. After an interesting corporate history, as of 2015 Sheraton has more than 435 hotels and resorts in 70 countries.
  • In Mexico, on the other hand, Sheraton history is also fascinating. The Mexico City Maria Isabel's rationalistic and functional language is an icon of modern architecture in Mexico and a fundamental work in the career of architects Juan Sordo Madaleno and Jose Villagran Garcia.  When the Bolivian tycoon Atenor Patiño decided to create the greatest hotel in Latin America, he clearly knew that what he wanted was the cutting-edge vision of these two architects for its execution. It would take the name "Maria Isabel" in honor of his deceased daughter. With a capacity of more than 600 rooms, it was meant to become a landmark building in the city.
  • Located on renowned Paseo de la Reforma Avenue and just 30 minutes away from Mexico City International Airport, it was opened on March 31 1962 and has, since then becoming the mirror of the "Angel de la Independencia" and one of the first international-style buildings in Mexico City.
  • In 1969 it changed ownership upon being acquired by International Telephones and Telegraphs, today Sheraton. That same year the hotel was expanded and an additional tower in Calle Danubio was purchased as well. Rooms went from 502 to 747 and ballrooms and nine conference rooms were built. At that time it was the largest hotel in Latin America.
  • In 1998 it was acquired by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc.
  • In 2016 it was acquired by Marriott International, Inc.
